Back 4 Blood – An Unfortunate Failure

Back 4 Blood is a co-op shooter game developed by Turtle Rock that had a promising debut in October 2021. Despite the launch reception and positive reviews, the game failed to draw enough gamers and maintain its popularity, resulting in Turtle Rock's decision to abandon further support for the game.

Back 4 Blood was released on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5. Although the game initially generated excitement and 3 DLCs (Tunnels of Terror, Children of the Worm, and River of Blood), the title's popularity steadily declined. At its peak, Back 4 Blood saw 3374 concurrent players on Steam, only a fraction of what the Left 4 Dead series achieved. This is not the first failure from Turtle Rock since their previous game, Evolve, was also a flop. The team had attempted to revive the game by switching to a free-to-play model, but their efforts were ultimately in vain.

Despite the end of support, the game is still available for purchase and as part of Game Pass and PS Plus services. The servers will remain active and operational. Players can continue to enjoy the 3 released DLCs, as no new content will be released.

In conclusion, Back 4 Blood had all the makings of a great hit, but it ultimately was not enough to draw in enough players.

The abandonment of the project is disheartening but not surprising. Turtle Rock has now decided to move on to their next game, and we can only hope it will be the hit they were looking for.
