Wisconsin and North Carolina Ban TikTok on Government Devices over Cyber Security Concerns

On Thursday, the governors of Wisconsin and North Carolina signed orders banning the use of the popular video app TikTok on state-owned devices. The ban was issued due to cyber security concerns, joining a number of other US states and the federal government in prohibiting the usage of the Chinese-owned app.

Main Part: Wisconsin's Governor Tony Evers also banned the vendors, products and services of other Chinese companies, such as Huawei Technologies, Hikvision, Tencent Holdings, ZTE Corp and Russian-based Kaspersky Lab. In a statement, Evers said, "defending our state's technology and cybersecurity infrastructure and protecting digital privacy have to be a top priority for us as a state." He emphasized the importance of digital security in the digital age, especially for state-owned devices.

The ban on TikTok and other Chinese-owned apps follows the US government's decision to restrict the usage of Chinese-made technology in government agencies. The US government has also restricted the usage of certain Chinese-made apps such as WeChat, due to privacy and security concerns.

In response to the ban, TikTok has said that it is "committed to protecting users' privacy and safety." The company has also been working with US lawmakers to address their concerns. In addition, the company has stated that it is "investing in security, privacy and safety features for our users around the world."
